Cosmetic Grade Argan Oil: Grades & Specifications

For formulators and quality teams choosing an argan oil grade. Grade selection is a trade-off between sensory profile, processing and cost — and it should be settled with a specification sheet and a sample, not a product name.

Argan oil grade types used in cosmetics

These are the grade categories buyers commonly evaluate. Which grades we can currently supply is confirmed with your quotation.

  • Virgin (cold-pressed)

Mechanically pressed from unroasted kernels and filtered. Retains the characteristic nutty odour and golden colour; typically chosen where a natural, minimally processed ingredient is part of the product story.

  • Deodorized

Virgin oil further processed to reduce odour. Often chosen for fragranced or sensory-sensitive leave-on products where the native argan scent would interfere.

  • Refined

Further processed for a neutral colour and odour. Relevant where cost and neutrality matter more than a minimally processed claim — for example some soap and blended applications.

  • Organic

Ecocert/COSMOS and USDA Organic certified argan oil (certificate copies on request). Organic lots, scope and documentation are covered on the organic wholesale page.

Specification parameters to request

We do not publish technical values until they are taken from verified specification sheets or lab reports. These are the parameters worth requesting for any cosmetic-grade argan oil:

ParameterWhy it matters
Acid value / free fatty acidsIndicator of hydrolysis and kernel/oil handling quality.
Peroxide valueIndicator of primary oxidation — important for shelf life of the finished product.
Fatty acid composition (GC)Confirms identity and helps detect blending with other oils.
Colour and odourDrives grade choice for sensory-sensitive formulations.
Relative density and refractive indexRoutine identity checks for incoming QC.
Moisture and impuritiesAffects stability and filtration performance.
Unsaponifiable matterRelevant for formulators who value the minor-component fraction.
Contaminant screeningAsk which pesticide, heavy-metal or microbial tests are available for the lot.

FAQ

Procurement questions

What is the INCI name for argan oil?

The INCI name commonly used for argan kernel oil is Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil. Confirm it against the specification sheet supplied for your grade.

Which grade should I use for a face serum?

That depends on your fragrance, colour and positioning requirements, which is why we recommend comparing samples against your brief. We do not give formulation advice.

Do you publish fatty acid values?

Not until they are taken from verified specification sheets or lab reports for the grade supplied. Request the specification sheet instead.
