Bulk Argan Oil Buying Guide: From Specification to Purchase Order

Seven decisions stand between “we need argan oil” and a purchase order a quality team will sign off. This guide walks through them in the order procurement usually meets them, with the published references behind each one.

Key takeaways

  • Decide kernel preparation (unroasted cosmetic vs roasted culinary) and processing (virgin vs deodorized) before you ask for prices — they change the product, not just the label.
  • Write acceptance limits against a published reference such as the Moroccan standard’s extra-virgin grade, and name the test methods.
  • Bulk argan oil is commonly supplied from 1 L jerrycans up to 1,000 L IBC totes; confirm the formats available with each quotation.
  • For organic lots entering the U.S., an electronic NOP Import Certificate is required per shipment.

1. Decide what you are actually buying

“Argan oil” covers several different ingredients. The first split is kernel preparation: cosmetic argan oil is cold-pressed from unroasted kernels, while culinary oil is pressed from kernels roasted for a few minutes, which gives it a darker, copper colour and a nutty taste.[1] Both can carry the same INCI name, so the difference has to be written into your specification — see cosmetic vs culinary argan oil.

The second split is processing. Cosmetics manufacturers frequently use argan oil that has been deodorized or refined to remove colour and aroma;[2] virgin oil keeps its natural odour and minor components. The trade-offs are covered in virgin vs deodorized argan oil. For most skin- and hair-care formulas the starting point is a cosmetic-grade argan oil specification.

2. Write the specification before the RFQ

A supplier can only quote accurately against a specification. Morocco’s argan oil standard (NM 08.5.090) grades virgin argan oil by acidity, and the scientific literature uses it as the reference point for quality limits.[1]

Virgin argan oil grades by acidity under the Moroccan standard NM 08.5.090
GradeFree acidity (g/100 g, as oleic acid)
Extra virgin< 0.8
Fine virgin0.8 – 1.5
Ordinary virgin1.5 – 2.5
Lampante> 2.5

Beyond acidity, a workable specification usually names peroxide value, UV absorbance (K232/K270), fatty-acid composition, and — if authenticity matters to you — sterol composition. Each parameter, its reference range and the ISO method behind it are laid out in argan oil specifications explained.

3. Choose a packaging format your plant can receive

Across published Moroccan supplier listings, bulk argan oil is typically offered in HDPE jerrycans (1 L to around 25 L), 200 L drums and 1,000 L IBC totes, with flexitanks quoted for full container loads.[3][4][5] Treat these as industry-typical formats rather than anyone’s guaranteed range — available formats are confirmed with each quotation.

Published minimum order quantities in this market commonly start in the single-digit litres for bulk grades,[3][4] but they vary by grade, format and certification. Our own bulk packaging options and minimums are confirmed per quotation. For the trade-offs between formats, see drums vs IBC totes vs jerrycans.

4. Approve a sample that represents the bulk lot

A sample only protects you if it comes from the same source, grade and processing route as the oil you will receive. Ask for the sample’s lot number and COA, keep a retained portion, and write the approved sample reference into the purchase order.

Our argan oil samples process links every evaluation sample to the grade and specification it represents.

5. Line up the document file

Most quality teams need four documents before first purchase: the specification sheet, a representative certificate of analysis, a safety data sheet and, where claimed, certification certificates with scope and expiry. The technical document pack lists what we provide; how to read an argan oil COA explains what to check on each result.

Under OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard an SDS follows a fixed 16-section format,[6] which is summarised on our argan oil SDS page.

6. Plan the import, not just the freight

U.S. Customs has classified argan oil from Morocco under HTSUS subheading 1515.90.8090, with a general duty rate of 3.2% ad valorem; products of Morocco can enter free of duty under the U.S.–Morocco Free Trade Agreement when the agreement’s requirements are met.[7] Duty rates change, so confirm the current treatment with your customs broker.

Organic lots need an electronic NOP Import Certificate for each shipment, issued by the exporter’s certifier.[8] The full document set is covered in importing argan oil into the U.S., and our export and logistics page explains how we quote delivered terms.

7. Send an RFQ a supplier can actually price

Incomplete RFQs produce incomparable quotes. Include at least:

  1. Application and finished-product type
  2. Kernel preparation and processing (unroasted/roasted; virgin/deodorized)
  3. Specification limits and test methods, or a request for the supplier’s specification
  4. Certification requirements (organic scheme, GMP)
  5. Annual volume, first-order volume and release pattern
  6. Packaging format and pallet constraints
  7. Destination, preferred Incoterms® rule and required delivery window
  8. Document requirements for approval and for each shipment

Lead times from Morocco depend on grade, format and destination and are confirmed with each quotation. When your brief is ready, request bulk argan oil pricing or review our bulk argan oil supply and Moroccan argan oil wholesale programs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between cosmetic and culinary argan oil?
Cosmetic argan oil is pressed from unroasted kernels; culinary oil comes from kernels roasted for a few minutes, giving a darker colour and nutty taste. Both may carry the INCI name Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, so state kernel preparation in your specification.
Which acidity limit should a cosmetic specification use?
Many buyers anchor on the extra-virgin limit of the Moroccan standard NM 08.5.090 — free acidity below 0.8 g/100 g — and tighten or relax it for their application. Name the test method (for example ISO 660) alongside the limit.
Is argan oil from Morocco duty-free in the U.S.?
CBP ruling NY N237743 classified argan oil under HTSUS 1515.90.8090 (3.2% general duty) and noted duty-free entry for products of Morocco under the U.S.–Morocco FTA when its requirements are met. Confirm the current rate and eligibility with your customs broker.
