Argan Oil Storage and Shelf Life in a Manufacturing Setting

Argan oil is about 80% unsaturated fatty acids, so oxygen, heat and light decide how long a lot stays in specification. Here is what the stability research shows and how to translate it into plant practice.

Key takeaways

  • Studies found culinary (roasted) argan oil stable for about 2 years at 25 °C away from light, and cosmetic oil for about 1 year.
  • Refining and deodorizing can reduce oxidative stability markedly because tocopherols are lost.
  • Published supplier shelf-life claims vary; rely on the date and conditions on your own lot’s specification.
  • Full, closed, cool, dark containers — or inert-gas headspace — are the standard storage recommendation.

What actually shortens argan oil shelf life

Oxidation of argan oil depends on its fatty-acid composition, its natural antioxidants and external factors — above all temperature and oxygen availability.[1] Primary oxidation products show up as rising peroxide value; secondary products (aldehydes and ketones) bring the off-odours that formulators notice first.

The main internal defence is tocopherols: argan oil contains roughly 60–90 mg/100 g, mostly γ-tocopherol.[1] Anything that removes them, such as refining, shortens stability.

What the stability studies show

Published stability findings for argan oil
Oil typeFindingSource
Culinary (roasted kernels)Average Rancimat induction period of 31 h at 110 °C; best stability over 2 years at 25 °C protected from lightGharby & Charrouf 2022
Cosmetic (unroasted kernels)Rancimat induction period of about 13 h at 110 °C; about 1 year under the same storage conditionsGharby & Charrouf 2022
Refined (bleached + deodorized)Lost 92% of tocopherols after 12 weeks at 60 °C, vs 34% for crude oilAsbbane et al. 2024

Cosmetic oil is less stable than culinary oil largely because roasting lowers moisture and generates antioxidant compounds.[1] Refined oil was markedly less stable in accelerated storage, and its authors recommend using it quickly or adding antioxidants.[2] Deodorization data are not uniform, though — another study found a deodorized argan oil with extended preservation properties,[3] so ask for stability data for the specific process you buy.

Storage conditions to specify

A published argan oil specification summarises the standard recommendation: keep in well-closed, well-filled containers or under inert gas, protected from light, cool and dry.[4] In practice that means:

  • Store sealed containers away from heat sources and direct sunlight; avoid outdoor staging in summer.
  • Minimise headspace — oxygen in a half-empty drum keeps reacting with the oil.
  • Use nitrogen blanketing after partial withdrawal if your site has it.
  • Reseal immediately, and record the opening date on the container.
  • Decant into smaller, full, lot-labelled containers rather than repeatedly opening a large one.

Container choice sets the starting point: see drums vs IBC totes vs jerrycans and how we pack bulk orders.

Signs a lot is oxidising

  • Peroxide value rising towards the specification limit — the first measurable change.
  • Rising UV absorbance (K232 for primary, K270 for secondary oxidation products).
  • Oily, rancid or “painty” odour notes; aldehydes such as hexanal are used as oxidation indicators in argan oil research.[1]
  • Colour darkening compared with the retained sample.

Odour usually changes after the chemistry does, so rely on numbers for release decisions and use sensory checks as an early warning.

A receiving-to-use protocol

  1. On receipt, check seals, lot numbers and the COA against the container.
  2. Log pressing date and the supplier’s stated shelf life in your inventory system.
  3. Rotate stock first-expired, first-out — not first-in, first-out, if lots arrive out of sequence.
  4. Retest peroxide value and odour before use once a lot passes a set fraction of its shelf life, or after any storage excursion.
  5. Size order quantities so opened containers are used within the window your stability data supports.

Frequently asked questions

How long does bulk argan oil last?
Stability studies found culinary argan oil stable for about 2 years and cosmetic oil for about 1 year at 25 °C protected from light. Supplier statements vary by process, so use the shelf life on your lot’s specification.
Does deodorized argan oil keep longer than virgin oil?
Not necessarily. One study found refined argan oil much less stable because tocopherols were lost; another found a deodorized oil with extended preservation properties. Ask for stability data for the specific process.
